Optimizing independence in activities of daily living

2021
Abstract Functional decline is one of the key features of dementia. Yet, there is good evidence that non-pharmacological interventions can promote independence in activities of daily living. Initial discussion with the person with dementia and family as well as activity analysis is recommended in order to identify the person’s strengths, capabilities, and goals. There are several practical strategies that may optimize independence via task modification, environmental adaptation, and working with the person and their care partners.
