Acute and sustained release of atrial natriuretic factor with acute myocardial infarction

Abstract The present investigation was designed to determine if acute ischemic cardiac injury causes the release of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF). Seventeen patients with acute myocardial infarction but without clinical evidence of congestive heart failure had their circulating concentration of ANF and creatine phosphokinase monitored daily for 14 days. All 17 patients had an elevated plasma ANF concentration at time of presentation. Maximal increase in ANF was on day 2 and 3 post-infarction.
