New epoxy resin, resin composition, and cured article

PURPOSE: To obtain a new epoxy resin excellent in heat resistance, water resistance, toughness, etc., by reacting a specific diol compd. having naphthalene rings with an epoxy resin in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: A compd. of formula I (wherein Z is a group of formula II or III; and R is H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, or aryl) is reacted with an epoxy resin of formula IV in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. tetramethylammonium chloride) in a suitable proportion to give a new epoxy resin represented by formula V (wherein m and n are each 0-10 provided that m+n is 0 or 1-10). The epoxy resin of formula IV is prepd. by reacting the compd. of formula I with an epihalohydrin (e.g. epichlorohydrin). The compd. of formula I is prepd. by reacting a methylol compd. such as 1-methylol-2-naphthol with 1-naphthol, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
