Hypertrophic osteodystrophy in growing dogs: A clinical study

2005
Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD) was diagnosed in 8 growing dogs with the history of musculo-skeletal problems presented to referral polyclinics, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar (UP), during the year April 2002–March 2003. Non-descript and German Shepherd breeds were more frequently affected than others. Seven dogs were aged less than 6 months and all the affected dogs were males. Clinical signs in most of the dogs were focal hard swelling proximal to carpus, pain on palpation of the affected bones, recurrent lameness and carpal valgus. Radiographically, a radiolucent line adjacent and parallel to the distal physis of long bones was a characteristic finding. Plasma biochemical and hormone estimations revealed imbalance in Ca:P ratio, hypomagnesemia, hypoproteinemia, increased intact parathyroid hormone and hypovitaminosis-D3.
