Safety measures in the Drogden tunnel

1998
The Drogden Tunnel is part of the fixed Link between Sweden and Denmark. The Link for road and rail traffic consists of an approximately 0.8 km artificial peninsula, a 4 km immersed Drogden Tunnel, a 4 km artificial island and an 7.5 km approach and high bridge. The Link is under construction and will be commissioned in the year 2000. The conceptual design was prepared in 1993, and the definition of the safety concept started at the same time. This paper describes how a Safety Concept was produced in close co-operation between the Owner and a group of representatives from Swedish and Danish authorities on rail and road safety, the socalled KKSURR (the acronym for Coast-Coast, Safety, Accident, Rescue and Clearance) group. Based on the advice from the KKSURR group and functional analyses the safety measures in the Drogden Tunnel, such as ventilation, escape doors, etc. have been introduced in the project.
