Lewis acid complexed heteroatom carbanions; synthesis of some α-pyridyl alcohols

Metallation of BF3–pyridine complex with lithium tetramethylpiperidide (LTMP) in ether at –78 °C, followed by reaction with carbonyl compounds, affords α-pyridyl alcohols in good yields.
