A research of domestic violence in Iran and India: basic issues and belief about wife beating

The present study reports the various types of violence experienced by domestic violence among Iranian and Indian violence victims. A total of 400 Iranian (200) and Indian women (200) were randomly selected from Esfahan city from Iran and Mysore city from India. They were administered structured questionnaire on the type of violence experienced, duration and so on. Contingency coefficient analysis was employed to find out the association between country and selected parameters. Results revealed that most of the violence reported was sexual violence followed by physical abuse, however, physical abuse and emotional abuse was found to be more in Iranian victims and verbal and financial violence was found to be more among Indian victims. Majority of the respondents were sufferers of violence more than 3 years. Partner involvement was found to be highest in all types of violence; much more involvement was in Iran. Iranian respondents were softer towards domestic violence, while Indian respondents were more serious about violence act and its perception.
