2016
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a famous children novel written by Lewis Carroll
in 1865. The novel has been translated into almost all national languages all over the world,
including Bahasa Indonesia. In Indonesia, the novel has been translated approximately six
times. The first Indonesian translated version of the novel was published in 1978, whilst the
latest version is published in 2016. Looking at the first and the latest year of publication, it is
obvious that the distance between them is quite long, thirty eight years. Concerning to this
phenomenon, this study attempted to compare the Indonesian translated versions of the novel
published in 1978 and 2016, especially in the noun translations. Thus, this study refers to timerestricted
theory, which is a part of partial translation. To conduct this study, the writer first
grouped the nouns based on ten noun categorizations. Through the analysis, it was found that
the noun category frequently occurred in the novel was common noun. However, the frequent
occurrence of the noun categorization did not equate with the noun category most frequently
experiencing different translations. In fact, human noun was the noun category frequently
experiencing different translations. Accordingly, in this case, it was found that the differences
were caused by language change in Bahasa Indonesia which was affected by social factors such
as social status and interaction.
