IoT-CAN based system for remote monitoring and control of DC microgrids

2021
Communication standards commonly used in microgrids monitoring and control systems often have coverage limitations. Typically this require both the human operator and the computer equipment to be physically on site. This research aims to develop a monitoring and control system for DC microgrids that uses external computer equipment and can be accessed remotely. The proposed system is based on Internet of Things (IoT) and Controller Area Network (CAN) technologies. It uses computational resources hosted in the cloud to perform monitoring and control tasks and provides human operators with a web interface to access the system through an Internet connection. The proposed system is validated through a case study of a DC microgrid. The obtained results show that it is possible to extend the coverage and capabilities of monitoring and control systems for DC microgrids with IoT services.
