Value of PET for primary staging of endometrial cancer

2009
1699 Objectives Evaluate PET/CT in the primary staging of endometrial cancer. To compare PET/CT initial staging with surgical staging. Methods A retrospective analysis of patients with endometrial carcinoma from September 2005 to November 2007 was performed. The study included review of PET/CT images, surgical staging and medical records of 65 patients. Three patients were excluded due to benign biopsy and normal PET/CT. 26 patients had PET/CT scan as part of the primary staging and 36 pts had PET/CT scan for follow-up post therapy evaluation. PET correlation was performed with surgical staging in 26 patients. 36 pts were divided into 2 groups based on presence of metastases and progression of disease. Results In the initial group (26), PET/CT upstaged 20% of the patients, when compared to the surgical staging. PET/CT and surgical staging were same in 61% of the pts. Overall PET/CT proved to be useful in 81% of pts (p=0.0025). In the follow up group (36), 100%(19) pts with no metastasis were all disease free compared to only 29 % in pts with metastasis(17), (p Conclusions PET/CT is helpful in primary staging in endometrial cancer. Association of higher SUV to worsening of the disease warrants larger trials.
