Upscaling on distorted gridblocks for simulation of advanced wells

2004
The difficulty of permeability upscaling from fine to coarse gridblocks is the dependence of upscaling results on boundary conditions, that lead to a non-unique solution. Using a near-well upscaling procedure can improve the upscaling results in the well vicinity because flow in the near-well region is dominated by the well-driven flow. A near-well upscaling technique on 3D distorted gridblocks is presented. The technique can be applied in the vicinity of any kind of well configurations. Using the proposed near-well upscaling procedure, accurate near-well flow can be simulated with coarse corner-point geometry (CPG) gridblocks. Equivalent results of well performance are obtained between coarse and fine grid simulations.
