Presented at the Billings Centennial at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD. Fogarty reminded his audience of
Billings' role in early federal support of research as well as in the growth of the Surgeon General's Library, and
then discussed the urgent need for better medical library systems that could keep the growing volume of medical literature
available to physicians and researchers.
