Step 4: Developing a Design System and Producing the UIP Pictograms

In Step 4 of a HCD process, a design team produces prototypes based on previous findings and on existing guidelines. As a consequence, this chapter describes the design production process. First, it suggests that the process of visual perception is universal, intuitive, and permanent. Second, it derives guidelines for universal, intuitive, and permanent pictogram content design from research on visual perception. Third, it reports a research through design process that was conducted to produce the pictogram prototypes, applying the previously derived guidelines and using the evaluated pictogram contents. Finally, the chapter presents the produced prototypes and the developed UIPP design system.
