Retrospective turkey of 57 cases retinopathy of premature and risk factors for oxygen therapy

2009
Objective To investigate the correlation between the occurrence of retinopathy of premature(ROP) and oxygen therapy, including duration of oxygen therapy, oxygen therapy approach, the fluctuations of SpO2,gestational age and birth weight. Methods From June 2004 to December 2007,premature infants in the newborn branch of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical College with a birth weight less than 2 kg underwent ophthalmologie examination.Follow-ups lasted for more than 6 months.Gestational age, birth weight, duration of oxygen therapy and approach, and the fluctuations of SpO2 were recorded.Single factor chi-square test was applied to analyze the morbidity of ROP with different factors. Results Among 57 premature infants who were analyzed, the prevalence of BOP in the subgroup with the maximum of SpO2≥96% (73.1%)was significantly higher than that of the subgroup with the maximum of SpO2 32 weeks (31.8%,x2 =6.226,P = 0.013).Conclusions Shorter postconceptional age might result in higher ROP incidence. The maximum of SpO2 ≥96% or the minimum of SpO2 <70% could increase the incidence of ROP.It was suggested that SpO2 should be controlled within a range of 70% -96% in the process of oxygen therapy. Key words: Retinopathy of prematurity; Oxygen therapy; Saturation of blood oxygen
