Assessing students’ social and emotional competencies through graph analysis of emotional-enriched sociograms

2021
Abstract Improvement of social and emotional competencies of students is associated with positive effects in various learning and personal development activities. To achieve this, Social and Emotional Learning activities are applied by tutors within educational groups. In the current chapter, we present an approach for the composition and analysis of social and emotional profiles of individuals within educational groups, based on the creation of socioemotional graphs. The former (social characteristics) is represented by sociometrics within an educational group, while the latter (emotional characteristics) is represented by individuals’ emotional competencies. Graph theory techniques are applied for the analysis of the evolving relationships of socioemotional characteristics, considering the interactions among group members. Upon the realization of a literature review over sociometric assessment and emotional competencies representation and development techniques, we detail the proposed methodological approach that focuses on the joint creation and analysis of socioemotional profiles within educational groups.
