A brief history and review of accelerators

ABSTRACT The history of accelerators is traced from three separate roots, through a rapid development to the present day. The well-known Livingston chart is used to illustrate how spectacular this development has been with, on average, an increase of one and a half orders of magnitude in energy per decade, since the early thirties. Several present-day accelerators are reviewed along with plans and hopes for the future.
