Abstract 12896: Incidence and Outcomes for Patients Presenting With Heart Failure and Requiring Respiratory Support

2018
Background: Despite increasing patient complexity, little is known regarding the incidence and outcomes for patients admitted with heart failure (HF) who require respiratory support. Methods: We queried the National Inpatient Sample from 2002-2014 for adults aged greater than 18 years who were admitted with a primary or secondary diagnosis of HF and required either invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV). We examined temporal trends in the incidence of IMV and NIV, hospital length of stay, total hospital charges and in-hospital mortality. We used propensity score-matched cohorts to identify patient and clinical characteristics associated with the use of IMV or NIV within 24 hours of hospitalization. Results: From 2002-2014, we identified nearly 4 million patients (NIV: 1,531,848, IMV: 2,466,647) presenting with HF requiring respiratory support. Patient characteristics associated with the need for respiratory support included older age, female gender, race, and increased como...
