EVALUATION OF THE PRECURSOR DECAY ANOMALY IN SINGLE CRYSTAL LITHIUM FLUORIDE

2008
The precursor decay anomaly in single‐crystal lithium fluoride has been evaluated for estimated dislocation densities at the leading edges of the followers on the Sano's decay curve, which is much lower than the Asay's decay curve. The equation for the density derived reveals that the density depends only on the slopes of the decay curves for particle velocity and stress, irrespective of the form of the follower and the slope at the leading edge. The density distribution estimated has a maximum at the beginning of the decay process, and the maximum density is about 1/22 times as large as that estimated on the Asay's decay curve. Thus, the anomaly is reduced significantly. By estimating the densities at the rears of the near‐steady precursors on the Sano's decay curve, it is also shown that a large number of dislocations are multiplied in the vicinity of the leading edges of the followers. The multiplication of dislocations results from initial dislocations near the impact surface and at the subgrain bound...
