Growth and spectral of Yb:Y0.78Lu0.22VO4 mixed crystal

Abstract A new mixed crystal of Yb:Y 0.78 Lu 0.22 VO 4 was grown by Czochralski method. The X-ray diffraction result revealed that Yb:Y 0.78 Lu 0.22 VO 4 crystal possess the tetragonal zircon structure (ZrSiO 4 , space group I4 1 /amd). The polarized absorption spectra of Yb:Y 0.78 Lu 0.22 VO 4 mixed crystal was measured. The maximum absorption cross section ( σ abs ) measured for π - and σ -polarization falls at 5.07 × 10 −20 cm 2 and 2.28 × 10 −20 cm 2 , respectively. The peak of the absorption spectrum for π -polarization appears around 983 nm with an FWHM (the full width at half maximum) of 21 nm. For σ -polarization, the absorption spectrum is dominated by a very broad band with an FWHM as large as about 44 nm.
