Diagram for Selecting Chatter Free Conditions of Centerless Grinding

Summary Deformation of contact area of grinding and regulating wheels is remarked to be important factor in rounding processes and stability of system. Characteristic equation of centerless grinding system for new dynamic model taking into account deformation of contact area is analyzed by using diagrammatical coincidence method and root-locus method. Distribution of characteristic roots for unstable chatter vibration is described by loci of constant-growing rate of vibration on modified coordinate combining with setting parameters, which is termed “Rounding Effect Criterion Diagram”. The diagram not only defines analytically chatter free conditions, but rounding effect for operational settings and dissolves difference between analysis and experiment. The diagram satisfactorily describes influence of dynamic characteristics of system on rounding processes and derives guidelines of dynamic design specification of machine and selection of wheels. And procedure of set-up of grinding operation for stable grinding and maximum rounding effect is presented.
