REDUCING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TYRES

2001
This article considers ways in which tyres can be better used for environmental benefit. Energy-efficient tyres have been developed and their use is reported to save on vehicle fuel. Retreading processes involve removing the remaining tread rubber and replacing with a new tread. Most of the tyre is re-used and this saves energy and materials. The process has a poor image in terms of breaking up in use, but modern processes have higher reliability. Finally, tyre care is considered, including keeping tyres at the correct pressure. The author recommends an eco-labelling scheme for tyres.
