Evaluating the Oil Consumption Behavior of Reciprocating Engines in Transient Operation
1988
This report describes a measurement system for continuous registration of the oil consumption of a reciprocating engine, and presents methods and results of determining the oil consumption at individual operating levels of ''rapid'' alternating load programs (stages lasting max 3 mins). The report further draws attention to the problem that the oil consumption of an engine at one operating level depends not only on the operating level itself but to a large extent on the other operating levels of an alternating load program, on the previous history of the oil, and on the oil itself. At GOETZE AG it has been common practice for many years to determine the oil consumption by continuous weighing of the oil in the dry sump. Before dealing with the actual topic, the measuring equipment used for this will first be described and the measurement technique explained.
