Knowledge base management systems: a database view

1989
Originally, the aim of this paper was to present a typical database view of Knowledge Base Management Systems (KBMSs). But soon it became clear that such a typical view does not exist. Every view of KBMSs, whatever it stands for, is coloured by the viewer’s background and interests in topics like databases, conceptual modeling, knowledge representation, logic computing, reasoning systems, machine learning and the like. So we decided to provide a speculative view of KBMSs instead and to raise some questions and problems seen from our background in conceptual modeling, databases, logic computing and automated reasoning/theorem proving.
