Ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate mixing ratios during the MEDCAPHOT-TRACE campaign

Due to the accumulation of air pollutants, Athens has always been of special scientific interest in winter as well as in summer. During a photochemical episode in summer 1994 there was a sophisticated measuring campaign as part of the Mediterranean Campaign of Photochemical Tracers--Transport and Chemical Evolution (MEDCAPHOT-TRACE). In addition to the year round measuring network of the Ministry of Environment (PERBA) at different locations in the greater Athens basin meteorological and air chemistry measurements were carried out. Completed with airborne measurements, balloon soundings, DOAS and LIDAR measurements this was a first time network in Europe of that density. An overview is presented of the ground based measurements of the photochemical tracers ozone and PAN in and around the Athens basin during the campaign.
