The use of exfoliative vaginal cytology in pregnancy

1966
Abstract 1.1. One hundred and five women were found to have suspicious or positive cytology during or within 6 weeks of pregnancy, and 96 had the diagnosis confirmed by biopsy. 2.2. The accuracy of cytology in pregnancy is about the same as in the nonpregnant state. 3.3. The percentage of patients who have had positive or suspicious cytology and no visible lesion on the cervix and in whom cone biopsies showed some elements of invasion is the same in the pregnant as in the non-pregnant state. 4.4. The risk of inducing abortion or causing other complications of pregnancy would appear to be small enough, in view of the type of disease found, to warrant continuing the methods of investigation described.
