Site selection criteria for deep geological repository -- Discussion of main methodological items

This paper discusses the procedures covering research, investigation, legislative, and licensing activities within the development of a respective disposal system. The responsibility for the erection of a waste treatment facility is in the competency of the producer, while the determination of requirements of a geological system hosting a repository is within duties of state geological service or any other institution officially charged with such a task. The given institution must be confirmed in its ability to fulfill this function. Special attention must be devoted to the selection of independent laboratories providing some technical support to legislative and licensing institutions. In case of lack of adequately equipped and prepared bodies, assistance should be found abroad, in developed countries or international organizations. A problem of international cooperation in deep geological repository development namely in connection with its role in Eastern and Central European region is articulated in the paper.
