French composer Lili Boulanger(1893-1918) was the first woman to be awarded the prestigious “Prix de Rome” for composition. Although she composed only a few of them in her short life (most of her works were chamber orchestra or choirs), Boulanger left behind several piano works which are rich in color and subtle nuances. The purpose of this study is to understand the compositional characteristics of Boulanger through her piano work, , which is composed of three pieces: , , and . Additionally, this research addresses the characteristics of late Romanticism, Impressionism, and twentieth century music manifested in this work by examining the influences of Boulanger`s contemporary composers such as Faure and Debussy. This study will introduce the relatively unknown piano works of Lily Boulanger in the hope that this will contribute to the understanding of her compositional style and help expand the repertoire of early twentieth century French piano music, which -for many- is limited to a handful of big names such as Debussy and Ravel.
