Bilateral Optic Neuritis as the First Manifestation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Associated With Neuromyelitis Optica

2010
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that is characterized by severe episodes of transverse myelitis and optic neuritis. Aquaporin-4 -specific autoantibody (NMO IgG) is the marker of NMO. We report herein a 28-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that manifested with bilateral optic neuritis. She had NMO IgG in addition to clinical and serologic characteristics of SLE. This is the first report of a patient with SLE and NMO IgG that manifested with sequential bilateral optic neuritis.J Korean Neurol Assoc 28(4):323-325, 2010KeyWords:Optic neuritis, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Neuromyelitis opticaReceived August 25, 2010 Revised September 16, 2010Accepted September 16, 2010*Ji Soo Kim, MD, PhDDepartment of Neurology, Seoul National University, College of Medicine, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, 300 Gumi-dong, Bund ang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do 463-707, KoreaTel: +82-31-787-7461 Fax: +82-31-719-6818E-mail: jisookim@snu.ac.kr
