espanolDesde el ano 2000, y con una periodicidad de tres anos, la Organizacion para la Cooperacion y Desarrollo Economico, viene aplicando el Programa Internacional para la Evaluacion de los Estudiantes, con el objetivo de evaluar sus competencias en las areas de lectura, matematicas y ciencias, para determinar que tan preparados estan para su vida futura. El presente articulo identifica los factores que indicen en la adquisicion de competencias en America Latina. Para este proposito, se emplea la informacion de los ocho paises latinoamericanos participantes en el Programa Internacional para la Evaluacion de Estudiantes 2012. Como la base en mencion contiene datos faltantes, se aplico el metodo de imputacion no parametrico hot-deck. A partir del modelo lineal jerarquico con predictores aleatorios, en dos niveles, se determino para los paises estudiados, en las tres areas evaluadas, que la variabilidad en la adquisicion de competencias es explicada en menor proporcion, por la heterogeneidad en las caracteristicas de los estudiantes. Ademas, se encontro que los principales condicionantes del desempeno escolar son el genero, la condicion de no repetidor y la calidad de los materiales educativos. Finalmente, se estimo que los centros privados tuvieron un mejor desempeno que los publicos, donde Brasil, Costa Rica y Uruguay fueron los paises con mayor desigualdad educativa. EnglishSince 2000, and with a periodicity of three years, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has been applying the International Program for the Evaluation of Students, with the aim of evaluating their competences in the areas of reading, mathematics and science. , to determine how prepared they are for their future life. This article identifies the factors that indexed on the acquisition of skills in Latin America. For this purpose, the information of the eight Latin American countries participating in Programme for International Student Assessment 2012 is employed. As the base in question containing missing data, the method nonparametric hot-deck imputation was applied. Using a hierarchical linear model with random predictor, on two levels, to analyze the PISA 2012 for the Latin American countries results we found that the main determinants of school performance are gender, condition of not repeater and quality of school materials. In addition, it was determined that the variability in skills acquisition is explained, in a smaller proportion, by the heterogeneity in the characteristics of the students. Finally, it was estimated that private schools have a better performance than public ones, where Brazil, Costa Rica and Uruguay were the countries with the highest educational inequality.
