Technology-enabled Sustainable Agriculture: the Agroecology Case

2021
Agroecology is recognized internationally as a powerful lever to make agriculture more sustainable and resilient to climate change. In sub-Saharan Africa, many studies have shown that agroecology can contribute to employment, food security and the restoration of resources and ecosystem services. This paper introduces the major movement towards sustainable agriculture and in particular the agroecology practice and how the technologies can help to support transition from traditional to new practices. Internet of Things and Big Data analytics will support the transition but new indicators with new measurement devices need also to be researched and are presented in this paper. In particular the importance of redox potential (Eh), as a new indicator, is introduced. First encouraging results are presented on AI treatment from information coming from miniaturized NIR spectrometers.
