Who’s in charge? “Feeling stuck” vs. agency following medial prefrontal lesions: A commentary on “Revisiting the left convexity hypothesis: Changes in the mental apparatus after left dorso-medial prefrontal damage” by Salas & Yuen

2016
In my contribution, I focus on the subjective experience and feelings that accompany dysexecutive cognitive impairment following left dorsomedial lesion, as described in this paper. This experience is compared to the experiences of other patients with left medial prefrontal lesions. Specifically, through a comparison to a patient whose dorsomedial prefrontal lesion extended also to a ventral area (ventromedial PFC), I suggest how a “secondary process mind” and a “primary process mind” interpret a similar “neurocognitive” state, in different ways. Finally, I suggest a possible primary cause for the nature of these patients’ subjective experience related to agency and MPFC.
