Meniscal Root Tears

2022
Abstract Meniscal root injuries are very significant both to the short- and long-term health of the tibiofemoral joint. Kinematic and biomechanical studies have helped to further characterise the integral role of the meniscal roots in regards to both joint stability and prevention of osteoarthritis. Meniscal root injuries are so consequential that they are functionally equivalent to a complete meniscectomy in regards to their effects on joint contact force and contact area. With this in mind, a great amount of research clinical and cadaveric has been dedicated to further characterizing these injuries and common treatment modalities. As our understanding of these injuries has changed, so too have our diagnostic methods, treatment algorithm and surgical techniques. This chapter is meant to be the most up to date and holistic review on meniscal roots currently available and will be a valuable tool for anyone who will treat these injuries.
