Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)applied toaluminum aircraft plates refers totesting theplates without impairing its worth orfunctional properties. IntheworkaNDT system architecture basedontheuseoffully inductive probes withexcitation and sensing coils andhybrid probewithanexcitation coilanda magneto-resistance assensing element ispresented Appropriate signal conditioning andsignal acquisition modules areincluded in thesystem. UsinganX-Yplotter theprobeismovedoverthe aluminum plate undertest anda setofeddycurrent images is obtained. Imageconversions, image filtering, imagesegmentation withfeature extraction andgeometrical characteristics ofthe detected cracks determines thecapability ofthedesigned and implemented software fornondestructive testing. A practical approach concerning theoptimal filtering oftheimage forabetter segmentation andfeature extraction wasincluded inthepaper. Several results concerning thealuminum plate crack detection and geometrical characterization areincluded.
