Prevalence of HIV and syphilis and its risk behavior among "money boys" in Chongqing(2006-2008)

Objective To evaluate the prevalence of HIV and syphilis and its risk factors among money boy(MB), and to provide scientific proposals for the disease intervention among MB. Methods Data of the cross-sectional survey from 2006 to 2008 were analyzed. The tendency of HIV and syphilis prevalence and its risk behavior were compared. Results A total of 47, 71 and 54 MB were investigated in 2006, 2007 and 2008, respectively. The rate of condom use while having sex with men in the last time was increased from 66.0% in 2006 to 75.9% in 2008. The rate of condom use while having sex with men for money was increased from 70.2% in 2006 to 79.6% in 2008. From 2006 to 2008, the proportion of unprotected anal sex with men for money was 42.6%, 40.8% and 50.0%, respectively. HIV prevalence rate in 2006, 2007 and 2008 was 12.8%, 9.9% and 7.4%, respectively, and the syphilis prevalence was 19.1%, 8.5% and 5.6%, respectively. Conclusions Among MB,HIV prevalence is still high and a high risk behavior was common.There is an immediate need on the disease intervention among MB.
