Radio Frequency Ion Accelerator
1983
A pilot project to acclerate helium and argon ions was successfully completed (in July 1981) using a radio frequency voltage applied alternately to a series of linear drift tubes. The r.f. power supply was self-oscillating which made the system very simple to run and in general its compact design makes it very economical to build for a range of non-relativistic ions.
