TargMoveS: An optimized sensor scheduling scheme based on target mobility variations

2014
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have witnessed a dramatic increase of the interest of the research community in the last couple of decades. Many applications are being deployed on the base of distributed tiny sensors ranging from mobile target surveillance to intelligent home networking. Research in the WSNs field has always an important goal which is increasing the lifetime of the network. This is a crucial problem because the sensors deployed have poor physical resources such as energy. One of the most frequent proposed solutions to extend the lifetime of the network is working on the scheduling of the sensors. In this paper, we will propose a scheduling method that aims at extending the lifetime of the sensors and then the whole network lifetime. The proposed method is based on a thorough analysis of the targets movements and their variations. Based on those estimated movements, the sensors will be put in sleep or active mode. The proposed scheduling method ensures a non uniform and minimal coverage of the monitored area that permits the detection of any target present in this area.
