The invention relates to the use of XANTHINES, EVENTUALLY INCORPORATED IN LIPOSOMAS, TO PROMOTE skin pigmentation or hair. THIS xanthine having the formula (I) or a salt thereof, or extract PLANT THAT CONTAINS, IN WHICH, IN PARTICULAR R SUB 3 YR SUB 4 each represent a hydrogen atom and R sub 1 YR sub 2 identical or different each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical preferably having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. THIS xanthine, EVENTUALLY INCORPORATED IN LIPOSOMAS, is used for preparing a composition cosmetic or pharmaceutical, PARTICULARLY FOR DERMATOLOGICA skin pigmentation or hair OR TO STRENGTHEN DEFENSES AGAINST NATURAL SKIN solar radiation.
