John Rimmer and Free Radicals: live electronic music in New Zealand

A survey of the work of two New Zealand composers in the live electronic field, discussing in particular the Composition series of John Rimmer and the music of Ross Harris, specifically that of his live electronic group Free Radicals. The author discusses the use of mimesis in these works in the context of the New Zealand electro-acoustic scene, and describes how these two composers have responded differently to the challenges of the combination of recent technology with live performance.
