Ecological Response of Plant Height and Stem Diameter of Carex pseudocuraica Ramets to Water Content Gradient in Sanjiang Plain

2006
The biological and ecological characteristics of Carex pseudocuraica ramets in Sanjiang plain were studied with the methods of artificial simulation in natural wetland. The result showed that the sedges reproduced both in rhizomes and in reeds in natural habitats. The stems aboveground, which consist of nodes and internodes, performed erect,semi-erect,or creeping growth forms responding to water depth. The plant height increased with the increase of water depth from July and became significant after August. The plant height(160 cm) and the amplitude of Deep water(50 cm) scenario were higher than Shallow Water(30 cm) scenario, while that of Draught(20% water content) scenario did not increase and some of the sedges died. The stem diameter increased with the increase of water depth, which mainly took place before July.Generally,it varied in the 1~2 nodes near the stem base, kept uniform in the central section, and became thin in the 1~2 nodes near the growing point.
