Construction and performance of a 1 m2 silicon detector in UA2

Abstract Within the framework of the upgrade of the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider a silicon counter array covering 1 m 2 of surface around the vertex region is being constructed. Its purpose, its design and first test results are described.
