Protective Organo-Silicon Polymer Coatings on the Carbon Surface

1991
The properties of thin organo-silicon polymer coatings less than 0.5 mcm in thickness on the surface of PAN-based carbon fibers 7 mcm in diameter and on the pore surface of carbon fiber composites with 80% and 15% porosity were studied in this work. The coatings were deposited by gas-phase method from vapours of organo-silicon monomers. Conditions of coating deposition, permitting uniform coatings to be formed along the fiber surface and along the sample were found. Thermooxidation properties of coatings and their kinetics characteristics wege investigated. During the oxidation in the air at 615°C polymer coating can diminish the oxidation rate of carbon materials by 2…3 times.
