Comparison between plate and shell models for scattering from a framed elastic cyclinder
1977
Two mathematical models are used to calculate monostatic backscattering from a framed cylinder immersed in an acoustic medium. A comparison is made between the results obtained with an analytical model based on thin‐shell theory, and the corresponding results obtained from a planar model. With the planar model the finite curvature of the cylinder is accounted for with a correction factor based on the geometric theory of diffraction. The frames are treated in both models as a periodic array of simple supports. The results from the two models are compared as a function of frequency, structural damping, fluid loading, and frame spacing.
