Transmission is defined as a way to transmit and change shaft rotation speed into desired rotation speed on another shaft. This study aims to compare the results between mathematical calculation or manual method and finite element method in designing spur gear. Tests were conducted to shaft and spline made of S30C steel and nodular cast pinion. Modelling process of components used Solidworks 2016 software and Abaqus/CAE 6.14-5 for finite element method analysis. Results from manual method showed shaft shear stress value of 9,6021 N/mm², spline shear stress value of 1,2029 N/mm², and maximum stress value
of pinion number one to number four were 231,986 N/mm², 179,173 N/mm², 166,466 N/mm², and 131,707 N/mm². On the other hand, results from finite method analysis showed shaft shear stress value of 9,563 N/mm², spline shear stress value of 1,200 N/mm², and maximum stress value of pinion number one to number four were 230,3 N/mm², 177,4 N/mm², 166,4 N/mm², and 129,8 N/mm². Results from mathematical calculation or manual method compared to finite element method revealed maximum deviation value of 1,469%, which is acceptable as it is below 5%.
