Extreme Computing: Challenges, Constraints and Opportunities

2010
Scientific applications require an ecosystem of computational infrastructure that can allow distributed collaboration and computation, large‐scale simulation and analysis and appropriate consideration of data driven science. The ecosystem requires the integration of high‐performance computing, in some cases to the exascale, cloud computing, databases, high bandwidth networks and the software and people infrastructure that enables the effective use of the components. In this presentation we will consider some of the challenges and constraints that drive the development of the computational infrastructure and its components – including computational models, energy and knowhow; and the opportunities that are presented, in terms of new science applications and new algorithmic approaches. There is a particular focus on energy.
