The invention relates to a memory device (101) for storing electrical energy, with a chargeable means of an electrical charging current memory cell (103), connected one to the memory cell (103) charging circuit (105) for charging the memory cell (103), a to the memory cell (103) connected to the discharge circuit (107) for discharging the memory cell (103) and a monitoring device (109) for monitoring a physical quantity in the memory cell (103), wherein a by means of the monitoring device (109) controllable switching element (111) for interrupting the charging circuit (105) is formed as a function of the monitored physical quantity. The invention further relates to a method of operating a memory device (101) for storing electrical energy.
