5-Hydroxytryptamine transporter and diabetes mellitus

2010
5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) plays an important role in maintaining the glucose homeostasis. Studies show that intracellular 5-HT of β-cells can promote insulin releasing, while the 5-HT transporter (SERT)which extensively resides in cell membrane and nerve synapse can reuptake 5-HT by a mechanism of terminating its action to regulate the physiological function of 5-HT. Recent studies suggest a possible relationship between SERT,its gene polymorphism and diabetes mellitus. So the research of SERT and diabetes mellitus can yield novel insights into the connection of nervous system and glycometaholism, and explore new target of diabetic therapy. Key words: 5-Hydroxytryptamine transporter; Gene polymorphisms; Diabetes mellitus
