Topiramate and asymptomatic ocular angle narrowing: a prospective pilot study

2009
and DSC LamAbstractPurpose To investigate whether subclinicalciliochoroidal effusion and resultingasymptomatic angle narrowing occurs inpatients taking topiramate, by ultrasoundbiomicroscopy (UBM).Methods Chinese patients aged 18–75 yearsfor whom topiramate was indicated wererecruited. Examinations including UBM wereperformed before and 4 weeks aftercommencement of topiramate. Results In this pilot of 20 eyes of 20 patients, there were no statistically significant changesin the angle parameters noted on gonioscopyor UBM, including anterior chamber depth,angle-opening distance at 500lm, trabecularciliary process distance, trabecular-iris angle, and scleral thickness. Conclusion Short-term use of topiramatedoes not induce asymptomatic anglenarrowing.Eye (2009) 23, 2079–2081; doi:10.1038/eye.2009.93;published online 1 May 2009Keywords: Topiramate; acute angle-closureglaucoma; ultrasound biomicroscopyIntroductionThere were reports of acute angle closure (AAC)associated with topiramate use,
