Research in the USSR on residual stresses and distortion in welded structures

1994
This is the final report of a project performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to integrate information generated in the USSR on residual stresses and distortion in welded structures. The document should be useful for engineers in the Western World who have little access to the technical information generated in the Eastern World, especially the former USSR. In order to find an appropriate application to solve problems of residual distortion in welded structures, one must collect as much currently available knowledge as is possible and proceed to ascertain a more promising path of research. New information should constantly be added to the collection of knowledge. Since there have been several extensive books covering these subjects, the authors have decided that this report cover only some selected subjects as follows: (1) Experimental methods of studying residual stresses and distortion in welds; (2) Control of residual stresses and distortion in welded structures; (3) Residual stresses and distortion in circular welds; (4) Transverse shrinkage; and (5) Angular distortion.
