Section 2. Glial Tumors Evaluation of Histological Grading Systems of Astrocytic Tumors

1996
To determine the clinical correlation of histological grading systems of astrocytic tumors, we examined Kernohan's grading system (the 1979 WHO (World Health Organization) grading system), Burger's grading system (the 1993 WHO grad ing system), and Daumas-Duport's grading system. Each grading system was applied to our cases, and its clinical correlation was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier's survival curve. Subjects of the study, who were all adult (> 15 years old), had astrocytic tumors that excluded mixed glioma, gliosarcoma, and pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma. Thirty-eight of 157 intracranial astrocytic tumors, all located in the cerebral hemi sphere, were selected. Our results indicated that the Daumas-Duport grading system and that of Burger were simple and easy to use, and showed good clinical correlation. Kernohan's grading system, however, had poor clinical correlation.
