ROSSLARE HARBOUR DEVELOPMENT: NEW FERRY BERTH.

1994
Rosslare Harbour, the largest ferryport in the Irish Republic, has recently undergone substantial development. This paper describes the design and construction of the new ferry berth on the western side of the new pier. The main features of this berth are: a 25 m wide single deck link-span designed to accommodate an upper deck, if required at a later stage; a 50 m extension to the pier; a mobile passenger gangway; a quay wall for fishery trawlers; a minimum dredged depth of 7.5 m (-7.5 m Port Datum). The main contract required the dredging or excavation and the reclamation of 434 000 m3 of rock, over an area of 61 500 m2, and the construction of a new Fishermen's Quay about 184 m long. As the execution of the works was based on the concept of constructing the Fishermen's Quay in the dry, this necessitated the construction of a water-retaining bound and the dewatering of the enclosed area, the procedures for which are also described in the paper.
